Clarification…

So, I’ve gotten a little push-back on my comment about Switchfoot.  I called them sellouts… yes, I know.  But here’s the deal: with the Beautiful Letdown they had several great hits, which landed them into the limelight.  I am a fan of Christian artists who make it to the ‘big show’ and don’t compromise their values.  I don’t know enough about Switchfoot personally, but I’ve always felt that they kept their faith in spite of success.  However, at some point they compromised their ingenuity and just became a little more bland.  Don’t get me wrong, a bland Switchfoot still knocks a ton of bands out of the water; but Nothing is Sound and Oh Gravity were albums that didn’t compare to their predecessors in my opinion.

So, that’s my two cents – and I stick by it.  I’m looking forward to their new release where a studio exec at Sony isn’t telling them how to dress and what to sound like – and they’re able to be themselves.  Jon Foreman is still bursting with talent and I hope the new album reflects their earlier stuff and sees a little bit of growth.

Music to look forward to

Just the other day I was telling my wife that I needed a new album to listen to.  Hello, my name is Patrick and I have a music addiction. Its probably more accurate to say I have an iTunes addiction, but either way, I listen to a lot of music.  And while there have been a few disappointments (ahem, the new u2 for one) – there are still a few albums I’m looking forward to in the next few months.  As is my custom, I thought I’d share some of them with you!

  • Jars of Clay. I missed seeing them in concert recently… twice!!  I have been to a ton of concerts, but somehow I have never seen Jars live, and they are one of my all-time favorite bands.  In fact, I think I have every album they’ve ever released.  On April 21st, The Long Fall Back to Earth will be released — ah, and just in time for my birthday!  These guys get better and better as time goes on.
  • Hillsong United.  These guys rock. My mom actually bought me their first disc back in 1999 (I think it was) and I’ve liked them ever since.  I look forward to each new album, and the last ‘best-of’ didn’t quite do it for me.  On May 26th, Across the Earth: Tear Down the Walls will be released and I am excited.  It’ll be perfect “top-down” music for the Jeep!  Of course they are playing in Atlanta in May… I need to ifnd out more about that!
  • Switchfoot.  I was a Switchfoot fan back when I worked stage crew for AtlantaFest in 1999 (or was it 2000?) at Stone Mountain.  They had just released their second album, A New Way to be Human, and I was an instant fan.  Plus they were way cool guys.  Then the sellout happened… and I was “that guy” that stopped listening to them when they got popular — but honestly, their music was nowhere near as good as their previous stuff.  However, they have finally gotten out of the contract and are on their own label now… which means, let the creativity flow!  Jon Foreman (the lead singer) has been releasing some superb sounds through his solo work and Fiction Family – so I am looking forward to this new evolution of the band.  Not sure when it will be released though.
  • Mute Math. Of course, Mute Math.  I’m sure I talk about them way too much.  I have seen them 3 times in Atlanta, and they are one of my all-time favorite bands.  Their recent EP was good, but it’s been WAY too long since they have released a full album.  I don’t think they’ve set a date yet (it was supposed to release last Fall and it keeps getting pushed back) but I think they are hoping for a summer release.  If you like infectious rhythm, creative sounds, and keytars… they might be a good fit for you!

Fiction Family

If you love music, you probably know who Nickel Creek is.  You probably also know who Switchfoot is.  Jon Foreman from Switchfoot and Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek have joined up for a very interesting new band.  They are called Fiction Family and they’re releasing an album on January 20th.  I’ve listened to some of the music so far, and I am loving it.  I’m really looking forward to the release of this album.  Here’s the music video (below) and an opportunity to pre-order the album.  If you like music, you’re going to love Fiction Family!

More New Music

I am a music junkie.  I spend WAY too much on iTunes.  In fact, if you’re feeling particularly generous and feel like sending me something… make it an iTunes gift card!
Tonight I picked up the new Jars of Clay EP.  Seriously, I dig everything these guys put out.  I had a very short period where I was a little off-put by them; but it didn’t last long.  These guys are the forerunners for so many musicians.  People like Switchfoot or even Third Day wouldn’t be who they are without them.  Jars did it again with this EP.  I can only hope there’s a full album lurking in the shadows waiting to drop. (Jars writes so many songs sometimes they’ll release an EP then a full album)  The EP has a few oldies redone.  Very cool.
One of my favorite bands from yesteryear, Ten Shekel Shirt, just released a new album.  I wish I had an extra $10 laying around, I’d LOVE to pick it up.
Some other albums I’m looking forward to:  (Surprisingly, most of them fall in the genre of ‘christian’)

Lincoln Brewster – I got to hear just one song off of his upcoming album and the more I listen to it the more I like it.  I have never bought any of his albums.  It’s not as though I didn’t like him, just never felt compelled. :)  This new one seems like the next step in an evolution of worship for me.  I can’t wait to hear it!  Can anyone say 80′s rock?

Mute Math – This band probably ranks in the top 3 as far as talent is concerned.  These guys are incredible musicians.  It’s too bad the old band didn’t make it (Earthsuit for anyone in the dark) but they definitely stepped it up a notch.  They have a new one dropping in the next month and I am very excited.  I’ve seen them in concert 3 times here in Atlanta… and they’re impressive each time.  Too many bands can’t perform live these days…
Bebo Norman - The old mantra for rock is once a rock star gets married he loses his edge.  For Bebo – though he was never a ‘rock’ star – a similar transition happened.  In the late 90′s (and early 2000′s) of ‘folk rock’, Bebo’s thoughtful lyrics and acoustic melodies dominated — in my opinion.  A few years ago, he just fell off my radar.  He has a new one coming out, and from what I can tell it will be a very interesting album.  I met Bebo backstage at a show several years back with Mel and we introduced ourselves, to which he replied “nice to meet you, I’m Bebo.”  Very humble guy with a super cool name.  Hope this new album is great!
Andrew Peterson - Kind of a similar story with Bebo, Andrew Peterson’s nasal sound dropped with the flavor of the month.  This guy takes it to an even deeper level with some amazing lyrics. While I’d argue he’s a better songwriter than singer, again his new album is looking good to me.  I’m glad he’s stuck around, he brings a level of sanity and  truth to the industry.
Taylor Swift - Yes, I know.  Honestly, I’m liking a little more country these days (note: little… not a lot).  It’s hard for me to get into a lot of country, since I typically like music and much of it seems very bland and predictable.  But Taylor is a different story, I’m looking forward to a new album.  I just discovered her in the Spring (I told you I’m not into Country!), so it’ll be like Christmas to get 2 albums in a year.
U2 – Can’t leave them out.  I am eagerly awaiting their new drop this Fall (hopefully).  I have almost every song ever released by them, and I can’t get enough. (btw, most expensive concert I have EVER been to!)
What I’m digging at the moment:

Coldplay – While I was a little disappointed at first by the new album, it has grown on me.  I still don’t think it’s as stellar as X&Y, but it is worth the buy – and perfect for an evening drive in the Jeep with the top down and doors off.
Hillsong – Hillsong just released a new one titled This Is Our Day.  I’m more of a ‘united’ fan, but it’s a good album… and is currently my ‘worship’ album of choice.
Delirious – I am still digging Delirious’ new album.  This one will have a playlist on my iPod for a while!

New Music Tuesday

I love Tuesdays… new media to play with.  Generally it’s the release date for DVD’s and Music.  Both of which I’m a pretty big sucker for.  This tuesday I have particularly been looking forward to… it’s the release of the new Coldplay album.   I was a late bloomer to Coldplay; X&Y being the first album I actually bought by them (and instantly loved it).  I think the coolest ad on TV is the apple ad with coldplay… it’s visually stunning.  These guys are the new U2, IMO.

Speaking of, U2 has a new release this Fall scheduled.  I am a HUGE fan of U2 (spending way too much to see them in concert last time they were in the ATL) – but I’m only ‘sort-of’ looking forward to this years album.  Bono has always been politically motivated, ever since the beginning, but I think they are beginning to lose their charm.  We’ll find out soon.
Also, another one of my favorite bands drops a new album this fall.  Mute Math is reportedly working on a new album to come out late in the 3rd quarter or early in the 4th.  I seriously can’t wait for this album either.  These guys are some of the most talented musicians right now… and they like to do some pretty awesome and unique things.  Don’t believe me?  Just check out how they played their song backwards on Conan… it’s pretty cool.

I just can’t..

The first time I heard an Amy Winehouse song, I honestly thought she was an African American.  Instead, she is probably one of the most…. ahem… unique individuals I’ve seen.  Her music is not too bad, if you like her style.  There is nothing on TV tonight, and her London concert is on MHD… but she’s just too odd for me.  I just can’t watch it!

Music Tuesday

I love tuesdays because it means the release of new music. Especially approaching summer, a ton of new albums are dropping each month. (and if you didn’t know already, new albums come out on tuesdays… as do DVD’s and games) Warning: links require iTunes.

Feed your St. Paddy’s with Flogging Molly’s new CD. They are Irish Punk. I’ve liked them and the Dropkick Murphys for several years now. Especially in March, it’s just plain fun to listen to. They are actually Irish Americans though, but still good stuff.

I’ve blogged about her before, but I went to High School with Lizz Wright – in fact, she was our Prayer Club President. :) She is a up and coming Jazz singer – and just rocks. Last year I recognized her songs in several TV Shows, one of them being Heroes. She’s got a new album out that sounds stellar at first listen. If you like soulful jazz, pick it up.

And Delirious has an early single out. Their album will release April 1st, but if you are a fan (like I am) then grab this up and wear it out!

Now, if I could only get commissions…

Midnight Music

I thought I’d share some music that is really moving me lately.  I’ve said before on this blog that I am somewhat of a music junkie.  I honestly soak up new music, I can’t get enough of it.  I have to restrain myself from buying more!  I’m sure I have helped big time to contribute to the fact that iTunes is now the second largest music retailer (second only to Walmart) in the US.  I bought the new Passion album, but it might be the last one I buy.  Their stuff is so generic, and it all sounds the same. Here’s what I’m digging lately though:

  • Edison Glass – I picked this one up for $7.99 on iTunes.  If you like Mae, Mute Math, and the like; you may dig these guys.  I’m a big fan of all above mentioned groups.
  • Leeland – I couldn’t wait for this album to drop.  Leeland is a phenomenal group.  The lead singer is just barely 19.  I first heard about them almost two years ago and was hooked on them.  I bought this album today and am enjoying it.
  • The Afters – The After’s new album is great.  This was another album I was looking forward to.
  • The Killers – Their most recent album Sawdust is not their best – but it’s just as infectious.
  • Spoon – Their album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is just addicting!!  I keep coming back to it when I need a pick up!
  • Bob Marley – Because I long to be at the beach right now.
  • John Fogerty/Creedance Clearwater Revival – My old roommate used to love CCR.  I get in the mood, and have to listen to them.
  • Hillsong London - This is an AWESOME album.  IMHO, Hillsong London and Hillsong United have invigorated the worship music scene.  This is a fast, upbeat album that rocks!
I seriously can’t wait for the weather to improve… there’s nothing better than riding in the Wrangler with the top down and doors off, blaring music!
Some albums I’m looking forward to releasing this year:
  • Coldplay is supposed to release a new one this year.  I am a big fan, and thought X and Y could have been their Joshua Tree.
  • Speaking of Joshua Tree, U2 is also supposed to drop a new one late this year.  I will buy anything U2 produces.
  • Hillsong United has a new album coming out in March called “The I Heart Revolution: With Hearts as One“.  These guys simply Rock!  I also buy all I can of these guys.  I have bought Hillsong United CD’s for the past 7 or 8 years.

U2 in 3D anyone?

It is NO secret that I’m a U2 fan.  These guys are possibly the world’s biggest rock stars.  I’ve read books about their evangelical roots, their hatred of legalism (which in some ways led to the opposite), and Bono’s struggle with the church’s inaction to the suffering in the world.

I don’t 100% identify with the conclusions they have come up with, but man can they rock!  Seldom is there a band that carries with them such passion.  And after almost 30 years they seem to still have that passion to change the world.  Honestly, whether or not you agree with their lifestyles; Bono and Edge really do want to please God.  I doubt any celebrity with the platform and resources has done more than Bono to try to help the poor.  (By the way, Jesus commands us to do this and we don’t).  Admittingly, I think he misses many other commands of Jesus – but that’s neither here nor there.
I just discovered that they have a movie coming out called U23D.  Yep, it’s a U2 concert in 3D!  In fact, it ‘may’ be coming to our IMAX screen.  Add this to number 4 on the list of things I’m looking forward to in the next month.  1. birth of my child, 2. launch of our church, 3. Lost, and 4. U23D.
Let me also add that obviously 1 and 2 are much much much higher on the list than 3 and 4.  :)
Here is a review on the movie.  It’s the first concert in 3D.  The Vertigo tour was the second highest grossing tour of all time (I think 377 million bucks), and I won’t tell you what I spent to go.
This may be a weekend date for me and Mel!

New David Crowder Album Review

Yesterday I spent way too much money.

1. I had to pay for a $75 Speeding Ticket (I hadn’t gotten a ticket in 7 years, and I got pulled over twice in a month!  However, the first one was reduced)
2. I bought Halo 3 for my Xbox360.  I haven’t spent much time on it yet, but it is great (of course).
3.  I downloaded the new David Crowder Album, Remedy, from iTunes (where I buy all of my music, however Amazon is starting to do mp3 downloads cheaper…)
So, I thought I’d post some initial thoughts on the new Crowder album.
Let me preface by saying that I have enjoyed Crowder since the early days.  I ordered his album All I Can Say from UBC’s website in college – before he was signed.  I have seen him in concert several times – the most recent being AtlantaFest this year, which was a great experience.  So, I downloaded Remedy with high hopes — and I was pretty disappointed.  Crowder’s last album had a solid rock sound with a bluegrass-infused overtone.  In fact, his B-sides for that album were flat out folk at times.  Considering at the concert this summer I saw Crowder play an actual Guitar Hero guitar (rewired to play real chords) and a keytar, shows me that he is striving for innovation.  I think this most recent project could’ve been a step back.  What could have been a natural evolution of his talent and exposure seems to have turned into a Pop/Rock album (only this time with an electronic feel… not something completely new to the band.. given Sunsets and Sushi).  The songs I really enjoyed were songs previously released on different compilation albums – most of which produced by Passion.  I thought lyrically there were some songs on this album that were exceptional, but as a whole they are a digression from previous albums (albeit that he is already heads and shoulders above most).  Musically the band takes an interesting direction, one that doesn’t appear to be a natural progression, but is altogether solid.  Even if you don’t enjoy the style, you can sure recognize the talent and creativity.  If it didn’t come off so ‘Pop-py’ and mainstream, I think I could enjoy it much more.
While I was highly disappointed because I feel this album represents a shift in the direction of the band – that is not altogether saying that they are not good at what they do.  If you enjoy Pop and Top 40 songs, you could very much enjoy this album.  At least download Glory of it All, Everything Glorious, and O’ for a Thousand Tongues to Sing – if you don’t own copies of these already.
