How to sell a house in 2 days

After accepting the call to Prince Avenue in Bogart, Mel and I immediately started the process of selling our home.  We had talked about it before, but selling a home is a first for both of us – so we weren’t sure what to expect.  Another factor in all of this was the current market.  Whenever we told someone we were putting our house up for sale, you could see them wince at the pain.  Many homes have been on the market for a year or more and still haven’t moved.  We were hopeful, but realistic that I might be commuting for a little while.

So, what does any good pastor and professor do?  I researched.  Mel and I both looked into all the things we needed to do.  We have an amazing realtor in Athens who has been a HUGE resource to us in helping us understand what to expect.  We de-cluttered, made sure everything was clean and the paint was all touched up.  My yard is immaculate, like a carpet.  We planted roses.  We were ready to sell this house.

The time came to find a Realtor.  It’s a more difficult decision than you would think – because truthfully they all do pretty much the same thing when they list your house.  I’m not a pro in the market, but at least with the 3 I talked to I am positive we would’ve had the same amount of exposure and marketing with all 3.  It just comes down to a matter of who is a better negotiator/advisor for you when you start getting down to the nitty gritty.  We interviewed 3 Realtors and found that they were very similar in most things, except price.  We wanted to be able to sell, not sit on the market – but we didn’t want to price it too low.  This number does have to be just right.

After much prayer and deliberation, we landed on the third guy we interviewed.  He’s a believer, has his act together, and he’s a younger guy – which I kind of liked.  He also happened to have a buyer looking for a home like ours in the area.  We signed the papers with him to sell the home on a Saturday and that very same day he showed our house!  We left for a quick vacation with Mel’s family, leaving the house as clean and nice as we could.  The buyer who saw it Saturday loved it, came back Monday and put an offer in on Wednesday.  Our house wasn’t officially on the market until Monday night/Tuesday morning and it had already had 2 showings and an offer on the 2nd day!  When we came home from our vacation, our house was already under contract and had even been inspected!

Was it all of the preparation we did to sell our house?  What worked best?  I’m going to be flat honest, God sold our home.  I like our Realtor, he’s a great guy – but God has put this together.  Of course we are only “under contract” at the moment and still have about 6 weeks until closing, but I am confident that God is in this.  All the stuff we did to prepare was our faithfulness in what God has entrusted us with, but God was faithful to us in putting it altogether!

Of course with the market we have lost money on the deal, but realistically speaking we think we sold the house at a fair price (though not the price I would like to have sold at).  However, I am excited to see how the other end of this story plays out.  All glory to God for His mighty works!  He can sell a house in 2 days in this market… that is one mighty God! :)

There’s no formula for you to sell your house in 2 days too… but how mine sold was through much prayer and the power of God!

(If anyone is looking for a good Realtor in Gainesville/Forsyth County or Athens, let me know and I’d be happy to recommend one to you!)

Big Weekend!

This is a HUGE weekend for us.  I will post some more details this week, but the short story is that a ton of stuff is happening this weekend.  Those who know about our story know a little about what is going on, but I hope soon to be able to share on the blog how this year has really shaped up – and everything that God is doing.

The cool thing is that it is way obvious that God is at work!  I cannot wait to share all of the amazing things God is up to.  Hopefully I’ll have something posted soon, but we would really love and appreciate your prayers!

I’m either rich or brilliant…

You decide… I’m either rich or brilliant (I have to remind you that I do live on a church planter salary).  I’d have to be one to be married to such a hottie. :)

7 years ago yesterday (Thursday) Mel and I went on our first date.  It was the first date I’d been on in 5 years.  It wasn’t that I wasn’t a stud, even though I wasn’t, but after becoming a believer I decided to wait until I was positive that God wanted me to enter a relationship before I started one.  I wasn’t interested in simply ‘dating’… and no, it wasn’t just because of this book.
Anyhow, Mel and I were best friends first.  We enjoyed hanging out together, but I was like a Middle Schooler.  I was so scared to ask her out.  We worked together, and I heard her turn down 3 or 4 guys who were youth majors a week!  No joke!  So, I wasn’t quite sure what kind of a shot I had.  After an evening of playing Frisbee golf at the park, I stared at the floor for a few minutes to get up the courage and asked, “Beales, would you like to go out with me?”  I had never called her by her last name before, it must have been the nerves.  Much to my surprise, she said ‘yes’!  Actually, she said “I’d love to Patrick Gillen”… in your face youth majors!
We went to Roanoke, which was about an hour away from Liberty.  In hindsight, if things hadn’t worked out it may have been an awkward drive home.  We ate at a great restaurant, and stumbled by a coffee shop afterwards.  The coffee shop was closed, but obviously saw that I was shooting way high and he let us in.  We have a picture of him.  After our coffee by the fireplace in our own private coffee house, we drove up to the star in Roanoke and just talked for an hour or so… until Mel said, “Pat, my feet are frozen.”
It all started there.  I had no clue then that God would bless me with such an incredible wife.  This past August, Mel and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary.  The past 7 years have been some of the best in my life!  Thinking back and seeing how God has orchestrated the love of my life is encouraging.  He definitely knows what’s best for me!
So maybe I’m not brilliant or rich, but I am seriously blessed!

Faithful in the Little Things

I happen to think that we need to be faithful in the little things before we will truly see all that God can do in the big things.  This kind of dispels the ‘go big or go home’ type mentality.  Oh, I do want to ‘go big’, but before we get there we have to be obedient in the smaller things.  That’s why it’s impossible for God to put someone in a kickin’ leadership at a church – when they currently aren’t faithful to one.  (In college I knew many pastor-gonna-be’s that slept in on Sunday mornings.)

This election battle has me thinking.  The next time you think voting for your local representative or senator – you may never know it, but you could be positioning the next president.  You may think that election is small, but neither Obama or Hillary would have a shot if it wasn’t for the ‘smaller’ elections prior.
More often than not, our habits will not change.  If you drink coffee every morning for 10 years, stopping that habit will be difficult.  And chances are, unless something interrupts the cycle, you will be doing it 10 years from now.  This is the difficulty that surrounds being faithful in the little things.  When God creates a new life in us, we sometimes battle with these old habits.  It makes it difficult to give God full obedience.  Integrity and Character are things now bestowed, but earned.  How you are handling your daily faithfulness right now will direct where you are going.
And sometimes, we just need a little interruption of God’s grace to break some habits.

Great Read

I go through phases in reading.  I read a ton sometimes, and then others I just can’t seem to pick a book up.

I’m finally getting to tackle some books, and I am reading one I got from my sister-in-law for Christmas.  It’s called Jim and Casper Go to Church.  I am really enjoying this book.  Jim is a former pastor, and Casper is a vocal athiest.  They visit some of the most popular churches in the country (as well as some unknown ones).  Other than the fact that he puts Mars Hill in the Emerging group, they had some VERY interesting findings.  Jim’s history as a pastor had really sheltered him from seeing churches for what unchurched see them as.  Pick it up… it’s an easy, but very educational read.
It also leads me to comment on how easy it is to think that this life is all about us.  We create a bubble around us in much of Christendom, don’t we? ‘Christian’ music, ‘Christian’ clothes, ‘Christian’ Schools… I bet if there was a ‘Christian’ car out there we’d drive it.  If you know me, I used to have a car we called affectionately “The Jesus Mobile”.  I have YET to see a car as decked out as it was.   (btw, I put Christian in quotes because this term really cannot be attributed to anything except a person.  For instance, a shirt cannot be a Christian… however we use that phrase to identify this sub-culture)
So, I’ve been there.  I too was steeped in the sub-culture of separating myself from the ‘world’ so much that I NEVER interacted with anyone who didn’t believe or think the way I did.  We tend to forget the Great Commission.  We tend to place ourselves on the throne of our lives, instead of literally giving ourselves away for the sake of the Gospel.  I honestly keep returning to one of my favorite verses that reminds me of this very thing.  This is EXACTLY why Summit Church exists.  We are a church committed to people who are far from God.  Why?  Because that is EXACTLY how God has called us to love.  We follow in His example when we do this.
I’m looking forward to finishing this book, so I can start another one!  I always get about halfway through and my ADD kicks in… and I’m already thinking about what’s next.

God is Great!

Today I am reminded of the faithfulness of God.

Church Planting is different than any other ministry out there, I am certain of it.  It is one reason us church planters stick together so well… it’s like a club.  Unless you are a church planter (or really involved in a new church) you may not even know what I’m talking about.  This ministry can be such a roller coaster ride sometimes.  You have ups and downs.
Yesterday I had a huge down.  I won’t go into details, but it was probably the most discouraging day I have had in a very long time.  I literally didn’t eat dinner and barely ate a lunch at 2pm today.  It was tearing me up.  But God is so faithful.  Today God has brought some very specific people in my life to encourage me and His Word has been opening itself to become clearer and clearer!
I love this story in Mark 9.  A man brings his son to Jesus who is possessed.  In the passage, the father says essentially ‘if you can do anything…’  Jesus responds by saying ‘No “if’s” about it, I’m Jesus, and I can do anything — do you believe that?!’  The man responds by simply saying ‘I believe, help me with my unbelief.’  This has been a deep prayer of mine.  My faith in God is not in question, but there are even times when my trust in Him needs to be strengthened.  Yesterday I lost sight of part of that trust — I saw things only through my own earthly eyes.  Man, God is so great to remind me of His faithfulness and strengthen my unbelief.
God, remind me more and more every day of your trust and faithfulness.
